Happy Monday!
I hope you loved my Saturday series episode with MacKenzie Barmen. Make sure you look at her social media so you can watch her hilarious series.
I am looking forward to a week of great episodes. This week’s upcoming Saturday series episode will feature Boy George, British singer, songwriter, and cultural icon best known as the flamboyant frontman of the 1980s pop band Culture Club.
Here is your list this week:
Documentaries and Docuseries:
Hey Beautiful: Anatomy of a Scam (Hulu) is a three-part docuseries. There’s big money in the lonely-hearts business with online scammers primed to take advantage of vulnerable women around the world. In the wild west of online dating, how much do we really know about the people behind the profiles?
The docuseries follows three women – Annette, Roxy and Gaby – who fall head-over-heels in love after meeting the same handsome man online, only to discover they have been swindled out of their money in an elaborate romance scam. Heartbroken and furious, they fight back to uncover the scammer’s true identity – and their shocking search leads them to a man with more secrets than they could have imagined. (May 20)
I interviewed the director and the man whose picture was used to scam so many women. You can listen this week.
Untold: The Fall of Favre (Netflix) is the next installment in the "Untold" series, examining the controversies surrounding NFL quarterback Brett Favre. (May 20)
I interviewed the director, and the episode airs Tuesday, May 20th.
Not Her First Rodeo (Hulu) is a six-part docuseries inside the adrenaline-fueled world of professional bull riding. The series follows the Elite Lady Bull Riders, five remarkable women battling in and out of the arena, risking life and limb for a shot at a championship buckle, eight seconds at a time. (May 22)
Missing Presumed Dead (National Geographic) is a gripping true-crime docuseries. This 10-part series delves into real-life disappearances, focusing on the harrowing experiences of individuals who vanished and the extraordinary circumstances surrounding their survival and rescue. Each episode follows the real life-stories of people who vanished, from their own perspective and those of the people who found them. These include items on a British family who became lost at sea, kidnap and torture victim Peter Shaw, aid worker Ian Purchase, who was taken by the Taliban, and journalist Michael Scott Moore, who was captured in Somalia. (May 23)
Pee-Wee As Himself (HBO Max) is a two-part documentary exploring the life and career of Paul Reubens, known for his character Pee-wee Herman. Directed by Matt Wolf, Pee-wee as Himself is constructed around over 40 hours of candid interviews with Reubens, conducted before his passing in 2023. The film delves into his early influences in circus and avant-garde theater, his meteoric rise with Pee-wee’s Playhouse and Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, and the deliberate separation he maintained between his personal identity and his Pee-wee persona. The documentary also addresses the controversies that impacted Reubens’ career, including his 1991 arrest and the 2002 charges related to vintage erotica, which were later dropped. In a poignant final audio message recorded shortly before his death, Reubens reflects on the pain of being misunderstood and emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance and non-conformity—a message he consistently aimed to impart to his audience.
I will be interviewing Paul’s friend, comedian Kathy Griffin, and hopefully the director about this poignant documentary.
Air Force Elite: Thunderbirds (Netflix) is a documentary providing an inside look at the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team. (May 23)
Reality Shows:
Sneaky Links: Dating After Dark (Netflix) is shining a spotlight on the steamy world of late-night linkups. But first, what exactly is a “sneaky link”? Well, it’s basically someone you’re sleeping with undercover. This one-of-a-kind dating experiment brings together a group of not-quite-so-single daters who check into the Sneaky Links Motel with their casual flings to discover if they are meant to be, or just getting in the way of finding long-lasting love. There are 10 episodes. (May 21)
My friend Tony Gonzales is the director, and I will be interviewing him too.
I’m so happy to pointed out the Favre documentary! It is a story I’ve been following since it came out 4 years ago and gets very little coverage! It’s shocking how the only remorse he has is for getting caught!
